ABOUT GAVIN BROWN

1976 – 1980

4 Pump stations from 10Kw booster pumps to 80kw high pressure pumps.

Prepared by Gavin R Brown & Associates cc 3 Pipelines from 100mm ∅ fibre cement to 1800 mm ∅ steel pipelines in low and high grade steel and up to 8km long. These included laying of trunk water mains to and building of Phoenix reservoirs No’s 2 & 4 for the Phoenix Industrial Park Development by Sanlam.

Call for tenders for supply of pipes, valves and fittings for City Engineers Stores.

Designed and prepared documents for 1.2km Glenwood tunnel in sand (project won concrete award).

4km River canalization of Umkombaan River.

1981 – 1982

Worked for Bridge and Structures. Assisted in design of new Tongaat Water Works as turnkey project and then worked on site as foreman laying pipes and as site agent controlling 6 foremen when the site agent was incapacitated. Later acted as Contract Manager on various small projects. Work included maintaining constant supply of building materials, plant and equipment, processed monthly claims for extras and progress certificates.

1975 – 1980

1975 – 1976

1st year sewage works section work entailed investigation design and rectifying problem areas in the five sewage works under the City Engineer’s control.

1976 – 1980

Spent four years in water section involved in upgrading bulk water supply to new and existing areas. Initial work included design, prepare construction plans, specifications, bill of quantities and supervise contracts, which included site measurements to issue payment certificates. Contract revolved around either increasing storage capacity of existing reservoirs, constructing new reservoirs, network analysis and installation of general reticulation and design of pump stations, rising mains and Pressurizing areas using pressure sustaining and pressure reducing valves off high pressure mains in Durban and surrounding Black Townships and Queensburgh.

7 Reservoirs designed, supervised under contract – varied from 6.3 Megalitre to 100 Megalitre.
